Just a little knitting

A little knitting on Sock Head Hat #2.  I loved how the ribbing made the stitches group like that on the needle cable.  I had set the hat down on my leg while I was watching tv and it caught my eye.

30 Day Sweater Update

Today is day 20 for my 30 Day Sweater.  I should have 1/4 of the sleeve done today.  As you can see, I have much more than that.  I plan on doing a long turtle neck (about 8" to fold over to 4") and there are only 2 days at the end of the plan to finish the neck.  I wanted to get ahead on the sleeves to make sure a had more days to complete the neck and weave in all ends.

I have about 5 1/2" left on the first sleeve to complete.

Name this pattern!  Please post your entry on the Ravelry board.  Winner will be selected by random number generator - there are two possible chances to win!  The random number post automatically wins, but if for some reason I chose another suggested name as the name of the pattern, that post also wins!

What you win: A copy of the pattern and a skein of the yarn it was made for!  Aura by Revelations of a Delusional Knitter 20% Angora/80% Wool fingering weight yarn!

You may enter multiple times, please post each suggested name in a separate post.

By suggesting a name as an entry, you are granting me the right to use that name as the title name of the pattern.

30 Day Sweater Update

I started a new skein on my sweater and was so happy that the color repeat lined up perfectly!

It has a muted striping pattern in it.

The yarn in the skein looks pretty blah, but its knitting up wonderfully!!

30 Day Sweater Challenge - A Simple Way to Estimate Yarn Requirements

A Simple Way to Estimate Yarn Requirements

Have you ever found an AMAZING yarn and decided to make a sweater out of it only to sit and ponder if you’ll have enough yardage then eventually decide not to get it because you just don’t know? If you have, I can relate. Today I am going to share with you a few simple ways to estimate the amount of yarn you’ll need for your next sweater project! Be glad, the days of the unknown yardage requirements are over!

Realistically speaking I don’t know of any simple ways to estimate yarn requirements, they all involve a good deal of math. However I do have some suggestions for methods that I use all the time to figure out how much yarn I’ll need to make a sweater.

The first resource I want to introduce you to is the yardage calculator over at Jimmy Bean’s Wool. Just head over to the Jimmy Beans WoolCalculator  and choose what kind of project, what size and the weight of the yarn you’ll be using. Then it does all the math you would need to do - instantly! Brilliant! This seriously makes things so easy! It is certainly worth taking a look at, especially if you do a lot of your yarn shopping online and need a quick place to find your necessary yardage. Another great way to use this tool is if you tend to use one weight of yarn fairly often, just take a minute and go calculate the yardage for the types of projects you like to knit. Take the numbers you come up with, write them down in your phone or on a piece of paper and put it in your purse or wallet so it is there when you need it.

Another great estimating tool I like to use is the Yarn Estimator App (for those of you will smartphones). This app is $.99 but believe me, it is a dollar well spent. The Yarn Estimator app calculates how much yarn you’ll need for knitting (and crochet) projects and it also has the ability to calculate how much yarn actually went into your finished project and how much is left over. That may seem like a trivial detail but if you know exactly how much yarn you have left it is easier to use it for small “stash busting” projects.

The last method I use for estimating yardage is finding a pattern that is similar to the project I plan on making in a yarn like the one I’m interested in and get a general idea from that pattern for about how much yardage I’ll need for my size.

If you’d like to learn more about estimating yardage and all of the other details that go into preparing to knit a sweater, download our free Sweater Planning Guide. This guide covers everything from choosing a suitable yarn to getting gauge and accurate body measurements. And did I mention that it’s free?!

This guest post is part of the 30 Day Sweater Challenge promo tour. Join us this October as we help 5,000 knitters around the world knit a sweater they’ll love, in 30 days. KACBW 2013 #1

Knitting and Crochet Blog Week Post #1

The initial post for the Knitting and Crochet Blog Week 2013 was to choose the "house" that best suites you.  I chose the Bee because the description is The House of Bee: Bees are busy and industrious, but can flit from one interesting project to the next as bright and shiny things capture their interest.

I am constantly starting new projects as my whim takes me.  I rarely finish anything, or I finish it much, much later.  I love to start things and find patterns and am all about the "oh shiny".

That's one of the things I love about knitting ... it doesn't go stale.  It doesn't have to be finished right away ... though it is helpful if you do.

Its all about fun and what you are doing.  I love that I can do whatever I want, whenever I want, as my fancy entices me.

Plying

I started plying some yarn today.  I finished the singles this afternoon.  Many say you should let the singles sit on the bobbins for a while before plying, but I was in the mood to continue, so who cares!  Plus it usually takes me a little bit to get into a rhythm, so the beginning bit I usually cut off the final yarn anyway.

This is one of the bobbins of singles.  I am just doing a regular two-ply.

Here's what is plied so far.  Sorry for the not so great photos, but its dark at about 8:30pm.

Why I wash

They say you don't have to wash Alpaca before spinning, because it doesn't have grease or lanolin.  Well, what is does have is what any barnyard animal will ... dirt and ick.  This is Alpaca after the SECOND rinse!

WIP Wednesday

This is the Montego mystery shawl.  It is looking awesome and I can't wait to finish the mystery.  I am currently on clue #1.  Clue #2 has also been released, but I have a bit of time to catch up, Clue #3 is due out on 2/22.

The yarn I dyed myself and I am very happy with it.  I wanted a pale tonal that would not detract from a lace pattern.  I am really impressed with what I dyed up.

May the Force be with you!

Well, he's not actually a yarn bowl, but I've always wanted one and he works just fine.  This Yoda goblet is intended as a drinking cup .... but its got no handle, is fragile and hand wash only ... sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me.

So instead, he's going to sit safe and sound in my craft room and only be used for keeping my yarn under control with powers of the Force.

Beginnings

Uurrgghh!  I haven't been very good about blogging this year!

Anyway.  I found this pattern (well its more of a suggestion) a long, long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away ... sorry, I had to) for a sock yarn blanket by Shelly Kang.

This is two days worth of squares (minimal time invested).  These squares are so addictive!  I cannot stop making them!  I am hoping that I can make several a month and possibly have a blanket by the end of the year.

If you would like to donate to my sock yarn blanket with any left overs you don't have a use for, please contact me (see sidebar right or leave a comment).  Each square is only about 2g of yarn ... so we're talking about the stuff you would usually toss!
